Dark Star Orchestra

Europe '72 | 50th Anniversary Tour | Celebrating the Grateful Dead Experience

The fact that that the spirit of The Grateful Dead continues to live on international stages has been largely thanks to the Dark Star Orchestra since the late 90s.Founded in Chicago in the years after Garcia’s death, they initially wanted to reenact some of the Grateful Dead’s historic live shows on club stages. Slowly but steadily the audience grew and the idea was taken on bigger and bigger tours. In the meantime, the Dark Star Orchestra has played over 3000 shows, often according to historical setlists, and has enjoyed the trust of the Deadheads and even the original remaining band members of The Grateful Dead for a long time.

Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay, Vince Welnick and Tom Constanten have all made guest appearances with the Dark Star Orchestra. Keyboarder and vocalist Rob Barraco once describe the bands’ impetus: “For us it’s a chance to revive some of the magic of this band. We’re offering a kind of historical insight into how it might have felt to have witnessed a show of The Grateful Dead in 1985, or 1978, or whenever. Even deadheads who saw hundreds of shows of their favorite band in the 90s can see and hear things with us that they never experienced live”

In September 2022 you finally have the chance to experience Dark Star Orchestra and also a bit of The Grateful Dead live on German stages.
