It should be common knowledge by now that Ninja, ¥o-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek are not just your regular chavs from Cape Town. Around the time of the football world cup in South Africa their crazy video for „Enter The Ninja“ spread like a bush fire through the hip music blogs and news websites. They filmed themselves in a fake documentary about south African white trash and declared their style as „Zef“.
Back in those days Watkin Tudor aka Ninja was a well known artist in his home country he even produced a few hidden camera sketches including ¥o-Landi. From the early days on they worked closely with Roger Ballen on their artwork, one of the country’s biggest artists. His photos and pictures defined the visual aspects of the Zef style. Four albums and countless video masterpieces later Die Antwoord are a crazy and successful superpower. Especially with their live shows they tend to set new standards over and over again.
The force of the bass, the raps that are spitted and sizzled in Afrikaans, Yhosa and English, the over the top macho attitude of Ninja and the otherworldly dark sex appeal of ¥o-Landi, the spectacular dance and video elements are all combined in a way that is rarely seen on big stages nowadays. Even better that we’ll get a chance to see them live this summer in Berlin.
